The Alexander
Friends of the Library was organized in 1967 as a citizen support group
for the newly-opened Alexander County Library. There were 57 charter
members. The following year, the group incorporated as a nonprofit organization.
Since its beginning, the Friends group has been active in promoting
and supporting the public library and its programs, much as a PTA organization
does for the schools.
The Friends were very much involved in fundraising efforts for the new
library building, which opened its doors in 1972. Many local citizens
will recall, as children, having contributed to the new library building
by buying one brick.
In succeeding years Friends of the Library have helped in numerous ways:
-
The Friends have assisted the library in acquiring furnishings, such
as the display shelf for new books, and equipment, including a substantial
contribution toward the purchase of a microfilm reader-printer.
-
The
Friends also have assisted in the purchase of library materials; for
example, when the library experienced severe budget cuts recently
and had no money for books, the Friends of the Library donated funds
to purchase some of the new books that were in demand.
-
Landscaping
for the library grounds has included the azaleas around the building's
foundation and other plants for the library‘s grounds
-
A
contribution from the Friends helped to make the Alexander County
Sesquicentennial Mural in the library's children's room a reality.
-
Support
for library programs, notably the Summer Reading Program which children
enjoyed each summer for many years, has been ongoing.
The Friends of the Library raise money to assist the library in various
ways, including membership dues, but especially through their ongoing
book sale. The group also has received funds from United Way, largely
to help provide materials for children's programs.

A
Remarkable 150 Years...
In
celebration of the Sesqui-centennial of Alexander County a 33' long mural
was painted in the children's area of the Library and depicts
children of our area beginning in 1847 through 1997.
Scenes and artifacts characteristic of the county are incorporated throughout
the mural and are represented in this slideshow. |
